New one for me. An existing 3/4 bath, 7'-11" by 6'-5" being remodeled for accessibility purposes.
The shower stall/partition will be removed to open up the whole bathroom as a shower area.
The toilet & sink will remain. The sink cabinet will be removed as well.
Can the existing switch & receptacle outlet remain? Maybe with GFCI protection & "wet location covers"?
I don't know if the whole bathroom will be subject to shower spray.
Thank you in advance.

This has come up in the past and it depends on how the inspector sees it. IMO, if the receptacle is going to get sprayed then it is in the shower area which would be a violation.

Under the 2017 and prior I'm not sure the code has a say in this. Under the 2020, well, who knows as you have no designated shower or bath tub space.
Seems to me that given the direction the code is going in the 2020 edition maybe the best approach would be to just agree on what the designated shower space is and go from there.
