 Was wondering in the Nec Handbook 2002 article 410.1 it says that a surace-mounted or recessed luminaire is (acceptable within or above the zone)in the discription page 461. From my understanding of this, I would be able to have suface-mounted luminaire within the 8ft by 3ft zone. I have a inspector telling me that is not what this discription is telling me and that Nec handbook is just a interpretaion and not the code, could someone please inform me on what is acceptable.

Re: Bathroom

410.4.D lists the type of fixtures that are not permitted over a bathtub area.

The ones prohibited, can become grab bars for anyone climbing in and out of the tub.

Surface mounted and recessed fixtures are not on the list.

I have the handbook and I think it is helpful, but it is not 'The Code' anymore than a handbook based on the NEC from an outside source.

Here is a quote right from the handbook itself.
The commentary and supplementary materials in this handbook are not a part of the Code and do not constitute Formal Interpretations of the NFPA (which can be obtained only through requests processed by the responsible technical committees in accordance with the published procedures of the NFPA). The commentary and supplementary materials, therefore, solely reflect the personal opinions of the editor or other contributors and do not necessarily represent the official position of the NFPA or its technical committees.
