I have a bathtub that has a recessed shelf directly above it. HO wants a sconce mounted in the recessed area and although it is within the bathtub area by definition, I see nothing in 410.10 (D) that prohibits a sconce. Am I good to go or did I miss something?

A wall sconce is permitted to be located within the the actual outside dimension of the bathtub as long as it is listed for damp locations or wet locations if subject to shower spray.

I agree with Chris-- you are good to go provided the fixture is either damp or wet location rated.

If the luminare is listed and marked for a wet location you should be good to go provided you use the proper gaskets for installation. Most open top wall sconces are not listed a wet location because they do not meet the criteria in 410.10(A) "Luminaires installed in damp or wet locations shall be installed such that water cannot enter or accumulate in wiring compartments, lampholders, or other electrical parts."
