Anyone know if batteries for emergency fixtures can be installed outdoors. The fixtures are 12v PAR 36. Any links to web sites would be helpful.

Anyone have a good site for outdoor emergency fixtures?

I would imagine that, with normal protection from temperature extremes and the like, it shouldn't be a problem. Most fully-charged batteries don't freeze, just like your car battery.

In my ship years, we kept the batteries (lead-acid) in very small rooms with a compulsory ventilation and explosionproof wiring devices and lighting. So, if they were outdoors the ventilation is given and I see not better place for it.

Lithonia makes their Indura line of industrial battery pack/lights with an option for a battery heater. So check the temperature rating of the battery pack. Even if the battery doesn't freeze, it may have reduced capacity at cold temperature.

I think the usual practice for most buildings it to try and keep the battery packs indoors.
