Where does the NEC state how often the electrolyte in batteries should be check or maintained, and if it does what section.

Re: batteries

For the second time. NEC does not specify. IEEE-450, manufacture instructions, or company policy.

Re: batteries

NEC 2002 Article 700

The batteries are subject to performance tests that are prescribed by the code and type of system involved.

There is no mention of maintenance.

I am going out on a limb here by asking if you are refering to specfic gravity checks for a starting system on a generator set in a hospital? If so then that is in a differant NFPA document.
NFPA110,8.3.6 and 8.3.6.1

Re: batteries

IEEE has standards for battery maintenance depending on types of batteries, flooded lead acid ni-cad ECT. In addition the manufacture’s literature is very good in describing what is required to maintain warranty. The IEEE standards can be purchased on line; the manufacture literature comes with the batteries and can be downloaded from some manufactures web sites.

If adding water; distilled or de-ionized is to be used and the cells should be filled only to the mid-mark.

There is more to batteries than just adding water.

Voltage readings, Specific gravity readings, internal resistance or impedance readings, intercell connector resistance measurements, torquing of connections at prescribed intervals, and visual inspections of the jars, plates, post and bottom active material space
