Battery Backup and FC requirments

Hi all

We are scheduled to retrofit a regional retail establishment. As I have conducted a walk through of all locations, it seems they have a high number of fixtures equipped with battery backups. My customer has asked if we need them all or can we eliminate some and I am trying to find the requirements so we can do a provide a layout and photo metrics. I’ve read 2FC along the path of egress but then what technically defines the path of egress?

Any help or guidance is appreciated.

Thank you

Usually the architect defines the path(s) of egress. He needs to do that to confirm that there are sufficient exits of the proper width to evacuate the structure in the event of an emergency or fire. They did hire an architect, right?

Yes. Is this info normally found on the reflected ceiling plan or am I asking for their section on fire and egress?

The lighting levels are given in other codes, like the IBC.
