i just replaced the brushes on my 14.4v miluakee drill/hammerdrill and it is not working properly. the old brushes were pretty much toast. when i put the new ones in it took some time to get the tension on the screw caps right so that the drill would work. it seemed that tighter was better. today at work however i tried to run a 3 5/8" hole saw(used to handle this no problem) and it conked out. i tried some more tightening-untightening of the screw caps to no avail. tried to turn the chuck by hand but it seems locked in both directions. any suggestions would be appreciated.

Throw it out, buy a new one.

Yes I know that stinks but I really don't think most of todays tools (especially cordless) are good candidates for repair.

By the time the tool is junk the batteries are also toast, two batteries approach the cost of a new entire drill kit.

oops- shoulda "ran it in" with little or no load for a few minutes, it helps seat the brushes and get them trued.

Might have helped. We have a good tool service here in cincy that will clean and reseat brushes for about $20, and that has fixed a couple tools for us.

But then, we used to be the machine tool capitol of the world... :)

Take it to the Milwaukee store for them to fix, and focus your efforts on tasks that make you money.

I have Millwaukee 18v and had problems with the drill when it quit working. I talked to rep and he told me I was running it too hard but sent me a set of brushes as a peace offering. When I got back to our shop, which is also a motor repair shop, one of the guys took it apart and found a lead that burned in two. A little solder and all was good again. Sometimes saving money is as productive as making money. Don't spend too much time on it, but always spend a little.

cordless wonder

cordless wonder

I have gone thru a variety of cordless drills in contracting and always keep looking for one that holds up with our day to day vigourus uses.FINALLY ,I not only found one but there warranty is flawless.I owned all the name brands all stating better than the others, but finally went to my local Home Depot and bought a RIGID CORDLESS 18 VOLT HAMMER DRILL. I Bought the combo kit after close inspection ,making sure sub standard products werent replaced with the quality ones to sell as a combo. After purchasing I went online to register them for there warranty, I saw an icon for a lifetime replacement and clicked on it. I registered the whole combo kit and will say after i had problems, the authorized repair center was all to eager to help me. My drill has been fixed twice, they gave me new batteries and charger with no questions or hassles. The warranty really works as long as you keep your original receipts and find an authorized repair center. Im not saying it's the best cordless pack out there, but their tools are made well even if your a contractor, the tools are a bit heavy and do eat batteries a bit fast ,but if their paying the freight to keep them up and running, their cordless tools aint bad. One hint, buy the combo kit without the sawzall and purchase that seperately, it will give you a second charger and two extra batteries for and extra 100 bucks or so. It's worth it.
Hope this helped.

Hi again ,
One more thing, if you own a 18 volt rigid hammerdrill, keep it clear from your face, i was running a 4-5/8 inch hole saw for a floor outlet, and trying not to damage the customers floor. i keep it on low with the handle on it, when my new holesaw grabbed it felt like i was in a prizefighters match because it does got some balls. they make strong products, but be safe or you will be sorry.
enjoy.

In six years I had 1 of my Dewalt 24V drills rebuilt, All the others are still working great. I don't have time to be with out my tools even if someone is eager to fix them at no charge to me. If you think that Ridgid has balls I think you need to try the 24V Dewalt.

Exactly as mdshunk said. Panasonic is a superior battery gun if you are looking for a new setup.
