Battery Needed For Exit Lights on Backup Generator?

I have been working in a building that has a backup generator with a branch circuit for the exit lights throughout the building. My question is...is the "Nkl Cad" battery in the fixture still needed? I would say it IS needed for the NEC. If so, (or if not) can anyone reference any part of Art 700 specifically, or any other article that would cover this?

What is the generator classifed as? Legally required? Optional standby system? ect.
