BC tap conductors

An interesting question was asked of me this morning.

It is desired to put a sensing device onto some motor conductors. There was some question as to whether this was allowed and how it would be accomplished.

It seems to me this is either a branch circuit tap or a class 1 circuit. In either case it appears that there is no length limit for the tap conductors. The only length limit I was able to find refers to feeder tap conductors.

Am I missing something somewhere?

My thinking may be off, but in that 240.4 requires all conductors be protected in accordance with their ampacity , an overcurrent device would be required. That would make the original a feeder and the feeder tap rules would apply.
