Can anyone provide me with any information on how I can become a certified electrical inspector in NY for 1 and 2 family residential? I have looked at the IAEI program. I am looking for a classroom, college class, or seminar environment that will perpare me for the test. Any help would be appreciated.

At this present time there is no state-wide requirement for licensing of electrical inspectors. Some local jurisdictions are requiring some proof of competency and accepting certification from ICC or IAEI as it pertains to 1-and-2 Family Dwellings, and Electrical General, while some communities are even requiring the Electrical Plan Review, too. Go to www.iccsafe.org/certification or www.iaei.org for more info. :) You can purchase study materials from these organizations.

wbalsam1 thank you for the info. Exactly what you have stated is what I am looking to get. I know about the IAEI courses. What I am interested in knowing is if there is any place I can go in NYS to do a prep class in a classroom environment. Do you know of anything like this available?

I am in lower NY, so the location may be too far for your traveling/class needs. Email me and maybe I can help in with some other method of studying.

As Fred has said, there are no requirements State wide, just some of the local jurisdictions. Having the certs does help though.

Good Luck!

Not really, but the next best thing to a classroom might be a an electrical conference/seminar setting. Check out www.dceca.com for their upcoming "Know-Show". It might be of interest to you and others. :)

I have considered going after the IAEI/NFPA inspector certifications, however they are not recognized in the state of Florida.

It is my feeling, in general, that the IAEI certification is harder to obtain than the ICC versions, simply based on the qualification requirement of both organizations. It seems the IAEI requirements are a little more stringent.

I'll be happy when there's reciprocity from state to state with building and electrical certifications. There are a lot of great job offers in warmer climes....but what a pain to have to retest, recertify, relicense,.....A little uniformity with regard to enforcing "uniform" codes would sure be nice.
