I have a home standby installation. Customer have an earthquake shutoff valve installed on the gas meter.

They are not required in my area, and I’ve checked with the county and they have no regulation regarding this.

I told the owner that I would install the gas feed to the generator before the shutoff. it makes better sense to me this way. The shutoff valves are designed to protect against ruptured pipes inside the home, typically encountered when the building shifts or partially collapses.

Installed this way, the customer could lose gas to the house, not have a leak, but at least they would have power.

Im not too concerned about 10’ of poly gas line underground to the generator rupturing.

Is there any compelling reason that I’m overlooking, to tap the gas feed to the generator after the earth quake shut off valve?

If I remember correctly, the shut off is before the meter. Will PG&E allow you to go before the shutoff?

This is one of the private ones, not the poco one.

It’s between the meter and the test port.

I believe the homeowner installed it a few years back.

Disturbing the main can create leaks if its old...always kinda tricky. What do you mean private? Not a muni supply? Ng? As long as pressure is adequate... Do it. But dont rely on a street shut-off. Put in another ball valve.
