I'm starting out in the electrical estimation career and have been advertising on Facebook to find work and learning opportunities, but I haven't received any responses so far. I'm thinking of offering free services to attract clients. Since you're experienced in electrical estimation, how big is the market for this career? Do most electricians handle this themselves, or is there room for dedicated estimators? Based on what you've seen, do you have any suggestions or guidance for growing my business, including things I should watch out for and ways to increase my opportunities?

What is you estimating experience? Type of construction, years experience, software that you use, size/types of projects you have experience in, etc.......most contractors use in-house estimating because third party estimators are not responsible for errors, omissions.....contractors are still responsible for taking 3rd party counts/BOM's to their vendors. The communication chain of GC/contractors/estimating dept/ vendors/addendums and bid day mayhem is completely disrupted. It's always been a tough sell in my book

The market for electrical estimating services is growing, especially as contractors get busier and need accurate bids fast. Many electricians handle small estimates, but larger projects often require dedicated estimators. Offering free services can help you build a portfolio, but also focus on networking with local contractors word of mouth is huge in this field.

How do you know they are accurate? Are they responsible for errors and omissions?.....the answer is no

More emphasis on transparency of cost per spec division with coordination between the customer and ICE (3rd party) would provide the organization with a contract model where accuracy and errors would essentially be a shared risk. I’ve seen first hand federal and state procurement procedures and ICE operations, there isn’t much room for errors in the process. There is a difference between accurate and precise. A customer expects precise costs. But a customer typically could not tell you their organizations benchmarks for any one marginal labor line, so how can I tell you what it cost your organization to install X, if you dont?
Which is why 3rd party estimators need to verify operational efficiency and benchmarks before contracting. If there are none, then the customer needs to sign off on each line item until practices have shown customer their margins are providing the projected profits.
