So I got two new employees, a journeyman and an apprentice is it normal for me to be the gopher? I seem to go get the tiniest parts for the Journeyman and running around telling him how to do it and the apprentice just stares off into space. It’s just frustrating.

Delegate.

Tell the journeyman to use the helper as a tool, or you have no use for him (the journeyman.)

You should be the one staring into space.

He didn’t know what a single throw double pole was he didn’t know I could switch two separate circuits off that , commercial wire don’t know anything about service work

I currently have the apprentice organizing the stockroom since it’s in shambles. I told him to spend the time and learn the material so you know when I ask you what it is.

Maybe set an example by having the journeyman be your helper for a while.

The main reason for having a helper is to make the journeyman work more efficiently.

To tell you the truth, I don’t know why he wasn’t calling the parts in anyway, and he tell me we need this and that I did it but hindsight, he should’ve just called the crap in himself

If he is at a job and you are not at same location but are planning to be there at some point, nothing wrong with him asking you if you can bring something if you will be having the opportunity to pick it up before you go or while on the way there. Hopefully he knows how to find other things to do until that item is needed. Kind of assuming he is working on some new construction, remodel, etc where there is plenty of things to be done. If he is on a service call or some other more specific install, not having an item could possibly be holding up progress period, and if he calls you and you can be or are on the way fine, otherwise he or the apprentice possibly needs to run after that item if it is something holding up further productivity.

Yeah, in our town, you can’t get anything so you gotta order it for next day. Yes I got to talk to him about finding more things to do. He tends to get lost if what he was gonna do comes to a halt just stand there and stairs.

I have similar situation as far as supply house is most of an hour away. But I do have many commonly needed things in the shop, along with some tools that are only brought along if you know you will need them.

I figured—- it’s only been a month- he really good at pipe bending, so I have to try and find more gov-commercial work- nice challenge either pick up or shut up
