Bell wire and NMC run through stud together?

Is it o.k. to run the wire for a door chime through a hole in a stud that has 14/2 NMC cable passing through the same hole? Is there a code refernce?

Re: Bell wire and NMC run through stud together?

will get you red tag here.
They could rub thru to each other.
Likely NO but inspectors here will not pass low voltage and romex using same hole.
I would ask local AHJ first

Jim, do they give a Code reference? I don't think there is a prohibition in the code to this type of installation. :D

Re: Bell wire and NMC run through stud together?

Jim and I come from the same area and deal with the same AHJ`S.The code referance used is that going through a hole is a raceway and unless both conductors are rated to be in the same raceway Then tagged. This is getting out of hand here and it`s going to get worse i assure you!! Knit picking at it`s finest.Sure we could use a rated sheathing but at the low profit margin here drill another hole and use cheaper wire JMHO :D

Re: Bell wire and NMC run through stud together?

From Article 100. Raceway. An enclosed channel of metal or nonmetallic materials designed expressly for holding wires, cables, or busbars, with additional functions as permitted in this Code. Raceways include, but are not limited to, rigid metal conduit, rigid nonmetallic conduit, intermediate metal conduit, liquidtight flexible conduit, flexible metallic tubing, flexible metal conduit, electrical nonmetallic tubing, electrical metallic tubing, underfloor raceways, cellular concrete floor raceways, cellular metal floor raceways, surface raceways, wireways, and busways.
From the NFPA NEC Handbook. Cable trays (see Article 392) are not considered raceways in the NEC.

I don't see how bored holes can be interpreted as a raceway.

Re: Bell wire and NMC run through stud together?

This installation is specifically permitted by 725.55(J)(1).

Re: Bell wire and NMC run through stud together?

Whoops I didn't see the non-metallic-sheathed

all of the Class 2 and Class 3 circuit conductors are in a raceway or in metal-sheathed, metal-clad, non?metallic-sheathed, or Type UF cables.
Thats the nice thing about this forum. :D

Re: Bell wire and NMC run through stud together?

Just to make it clear for all, either the power conductors or the Class 2 or 3 conductors must be "in a raceway or in metal-sheathed, metal-clad, non?metallic-sheathed, or Type UF cables'.

Thank's Don I didn't realize what it sounded like until I reread it. But yes it is either, or
You can be my editor any time. LOL :p

To the NEW MEMBER: That`s why we all have stayed so long here. There is a vast amount of knowledge here as well as a vast amount of EGO`S.Electricians all think they are the best ones as we should feel that way. After all when all is said and done there are no others to go make it work.Keep posting and enjoy what we do here i do :D
