I had an inspector fail me for using the red and white bell wire for a doorbell. He said it was not rated to be in walls. Southwire website shows nothing about this. Where might I find this? Thought about emailing Southwire

Thank you. I've seen some speaker/bell wire at BB stores not rated for in-wall use. iirc, it needs to be marked at least CM, CMG or CMX, or CL2X or CL3X to be put in walls of residences. The likely code citation is 725.154(E)(4). You can of course email or phone Southwire for clarification; Ive called Commscope before to see if certain coax wire was rated CMR for commercial multi-floor penetrations.

My gut tells me the inspector is correct and that the wire you used is not suitable for concealment.

eta: if the walls are already up, in many cases a wireless system will be a lot less expensive that trying to repull that cable.

Thanks for your reply. Job is done I ran cat5. Just wanted to learn from it. Been running the bell wire for years

You're welcome.

Most is rated for in-wall use but some is not. When I did commercial, we didnt even stock CM/CMG since most of the time we needed CMR, it costs little to nothing more than lesser rated cable, and can be substituted for lesser cable ratings.

In my experience, a lot of inspectors ignore or miss the less common chapter 7 and 8 violations; you got one that didnt.
