We have a customer wanting to have a bunch of breakers identified, alot of them are high voltage. It's in a multi tenant building so I am looking for something accurate lol. 10 years ago at another comany I worked for they had an Ideal digital tracer that worked pretty good but not perfect. Has the technology improved? There are alot of options, I'm leaning towards another Ideal tracer though only because there are videos demonstrating them online. I really liked how the new Ideal tracer could tell you when you flipped a breaker if the transmitter had lost power so it's kind of one man in that regard but I don't know how accurate it is in real life. Thoughts and comments are greatly appreciated!

if you want to map a panel quickly, without interruption,
there is nothing better than this:

not cheap, nothing better.

i can map an entire floor of a highrise, an entire panels worth of
receptacles, by myself, as fast as you can walk from one to another,
and use a labeler.

you put the transmitter on the panel, and a clamp on CT on every
one of the wires in the panel, and walk around the floor, sticking the
probe up to the wire, or in the device, and it tells you the circuit number.

no two guys, no radios, no cellphones, no bs.

We have the ideal one , and paid 900$ for it.
I tell people it's good enough to find GOD.
personally I have a hard time locating the exact circuit when neutrals are shared as well as if the circuit s are far away

Wow! Just seen the video for that thing and man what a beast. I mean it's alot of setup but I can see it would pay for itself quick!

take a journeyman and an apprentice, and give them a conventional tester....
and a day and a half later....

you now have three days labor.

or, the apprentice could do the
same thing in half a day.

for finding a single circuit, meh.
for doing a whole panel... yeah.

and... it'll do data cables, 42 at a time.

cool part was, i found it used here, on
the forum. edward didn't need it anymore,
and i did..... saved a fair bit.

thanks again, edward.....

But can the circuit mapper work without opening the panel cover to attach the clips since these days its protocol not to have an open live panel board?
