Where do you guys like to install the low voltage txf for residential doorbells ? I've seen them in the panel box, attic,,,, and have been unable to locate them on a couple of service calls.

Is panel acceptable location if space allows?

The panel is not a good location, as it is not permitted to be located in the panel. If you mean install it on the panel, that to me is the prefered location. Today the panels are sometimes installed in a finished location, so that makes the location a little more difficult. If the areas of usual choice are finished, then some planning will be required based on the design.

I have also installed the doorbell transformer on the bottom of the panel, even if the room is to be sheetrocked. I would also install a two gang tile/plaster ring just a little below the cover, for access. One could change the transformer out if necessary.
Other places are in the basement, just off a light box, usually in the furnace/boiler room, as it will not be finished. Also the attic, if there is a scuttlr hole.

On rough: Put a 4-0 octagon box above the panel flush with the wallboard; stub the 120-volt into the octagon box; stub the low-voltage out adjacent to the box and tie it to a nail.

On finish after drywall: Hang the transformer on a 4-0 metal cover with 1/2" knockout; makeup the connection between the transformer & the 120-volt; secure the transformer & cover to the octagon box; makeup the low-voltage connection.

There are more elegant ways to do it if you don't want the transformer to be supersurface.

Thanks, I don't really like installing the txf in attic,, and the panel area is almost always a finished wall in this area.

I see the txf inside the panel box often but believe that violates code. I guess I am looking for a good clean way to attach to bottom (but not inside) of panel box and still allow access through sheetrock. Did not want the panel cover to interfere with an access cover.

How about in a 2 gang bracketed metal box with two gang mudring installed on one side preferably high of a bedroom closet wall? Also close to the future location of the door chime.Just a thought.

Ranger12:
In that scenario, how do you segregate the LV from the HV? Do you put the LV and HV in the box and cover it all up (flush). Or, do you use a cover with 1/2" KO to hang the transformer supersurface? A supersurface transformer keeps the HV in the box, and the LV outside of the box. What's your total method? Thanks!

PS: Or, do you use a 4-SQ box with a HV/LV separator? The issue I see is keeping the LV and HV separated.
