I am going to be taking my state's contractor's license later on this year and would like to begin studying now. I assume NJ's code section of the test is very similar to the other states.

I am looking around the Holt product pages and find a lot of different material. At first I figured I would buy the exam prep book as well as the calculations book, but I am seeing so much more. I see packages with all kinds of books and DVDs with a large range in price. Some of it seems like it might be geared more for an instructor to use on his class instead of a single person studying on his own.

So if the people who have taken the code test in the recent years could guide me, I would really appreciate it. What books and study materials do you feel really helped you pass the test?

I believe the test will be on the 2011 NEC but I am not sure yet.

I went to classes, I'm also from NJ so just look around and you can fine some classes.

I have a particular class in mind that I plan on taking.

I am looking to buy study material in the meantime. The right study material that focuses on the NJ test is the question.

On MH base web page there are several various tests that you can take, but wait!

May I suggest one take some of the off thread type Quizzes, like understanding electricity and the like. I believe there's at least six sections with other tests.

This would determine the other possible book(s) that you might purchase to learn from!

While any test is or might be objective as to what one might need to know to pass, it's not always subjective as to all of the things that you might need to know. :)

Good luck with your pursuit!

This might be better posted here;
EXAM PREP

But for the test, if it's open book there - have the Tom Henry's Key Word Index. For study, I used Mike Holt's Master/Contractor Simulated Exam and Craftsman has a book with CD Rom - Electrician's Exam Preparation Guide.

find a local class.

that's what i did; it was a tremendous help. I took an 8hr exam in 2hrs because i knew exactly what was coming. That's my best recommendation.

also, the quizzes on MH's website are a good warmup.
