Bid for sandwich shop

I lost this bid for wiring of a small sandwich shop. Would like opinions on man-hours to complete the installation below. The building is an old brick building with tenants on each side of this and apartments above.
Sandwich shop is 16' wide by 48' long with 12' high ceiling all sheetrocked.
Surface EMT for wiring method. Basement below- again all finished - surface EMT. Kitchen located in back 16' X 14' will have droped ceiling and so will bathroom. The rest will be 12' finished ceilings and walls.

New 200 single phase service will be installed on brick outside, new by-pass socket, 2" Emt up 6' through floor (walkway for apartment above) up another 10' convert to 2" ridgid through roof overhang to about 6' above roof. Guy wires to help support. (copying service from neighboring tenant) 2" EMT from back of meter through outside wall, (2) sweeps and LB through interior wall where new panel. (existing 100 amp panel there now gut and refeed circuits to new panel)






Furnish electrical permit.
Install new 200 amp, single phase service.

Lighting on main floor:
Kitchen: Install owners (6) 1?x 4? surface fluorescent lights and switch.
Install owners (1) 4? track light over P.O.S. counter and switch.
Dining: Install owners (6) large and (2) small pendant lights and switch.
Install owners (2) paddle fans and switch.
Install owners (4) Exit / emergency lights.
Bathroom: Install owners (5) recessed lights and exhaust fan and switch to control.
Wire owners awning light and outlet for ?Open? sign at front window and switch to control.
Wire (1) 4? baseboard heater with thermostat on unit, under front window.

Equipment wiring:
Panasonic microwave 120V, 1680W. 14.6A. (left of hood)
Mofat convection oven 120V 15A (left of hood)
Cadco convection oven 120V 12A (left of hood)
Jordan under-counter freezer 120V 6.8A (drink station)
True under-counter fridge 120V 4A (drink station)
Beverage Air 60? Prep table 120V 7A (middle kitchen)
Scotman under-counter ice machine 120V
Bubble Tea Shaker counter-top unit. 120/240V
Blendtec smoothie blender counter-top model 120V
Fetco Brewer counter-top model 120V 2.2KW
Install cord drop with 4-plex outlet on separate 20 amp circuit at prep table # 10 (middle of kitchen)
Install (1) 120 volt, 20 amp dedicated circuit and (1) phone line at P.O.S.
Wire kitchen exhaust fan (220volt, 6A) and make up air unit (220volt, 7A), Maxitrol 14 temperature control
interlocked with exhaust fan and Ansul fire suppression control.

Basement wiring:
Install owners (4) 1? x 4? fluorescent lights.
Install owners (1) Exit/emergency light.
Install outlet on dedicated circuit for refrigerator and freezer.
Install (1) duplex receptacle in open area, and (1) duplex receptacle for future office.
Install outlet for induced draft on new gas fired water heater.

I had 180 man-hours in my quote. I figured all at j-man wages myself and my j-man helper. This project is labor intensive, with owner supplying all lighting,
only service equipment, conduit, wire, and boxes. I had about $3,000. for permit and materials figured with tax and mark-up (from actual take off)

I felt good with my bid. Owner emails me to thank me but, he was going with some else. I email him back and asked him what the others quote were at.

I was 45% higher than the bid he went with?????

plan b: customer retention...... congratulate him on his bid, wish him well,
and mention that if he has problems getting completion of the work (he will)
not to hesitate to call if you can be of any help, even if he just needs your
informed opinion.

one of the best sources of referrals i've ever gotten, i have never done any
actual work for. i got underbid, and while the work was finally completed, i
got a couple calls from the owner, asking "what about.....?" we ended up
friends, and he apologized for not giving me the work, and has given my name
to half a dozen people, all of whom had me do work for them.....

you've put your numbers up here for peer review, several guys say your
numbers look good, so you have a bozo jumping on a grenade to take the
job away from you. it's gonna happen a lot this year. try and be the name
he remembers to call when the bozo disappears into the mist......

You are right of course. I've had this happen before, only to have the customer call me later regretting his choice.

I did email customer back and thanked him for the opportunity to bid on his project.
