Black iron is the colloquial term for wrought iron &/or old cambric coated/enameled steel, typical to 1920's conduit, and some types of plaster wall and ceiling framing. Sometimes I hear people refer to malleable iron as black iron - IMO incorrectly.
White iron????? All I can find is a wiki for it, but can think of no trade use for it. And WAIT - malleable iron is annealed white iron - see I learned something....
Black iron - good for framing... Or hanging fixtures...
White iron as Malleable Iron - good for making LB's....
Black iron is used to support the white iron which is actually the white ceiling grid. Here's a photo of both, the white iron is at the bottom and attached to the black iron with special clips.
