Black wire as "neutral"

I know this is against code but I saw it today at a home and couldn't believe it. looking for the reference to show my helper and can't find it. some guy was wiring 3 ways at this home we are doing a remodel at and has the whites and reds travelers the blacks connected to the "neutral" from his three wire then has the power feed and switch leg blacks on the common of the three way. it was simple to correct I just was stunned to see it no dead end three way and the whites as travelers and black as nuetral carrier.
