We are supposed to retrofit some 277v 70w MH bollards with LED retrofit lamps.

To install these, you need to remove the ballast and wire the line voltage to the medium base socket, then install the LED lamp into the socket.
Sounds easy.

Isn't this a violation of 210.6(C)(3)?

Are we allowed to connect 277v to a medium base socket for this retrofit?
The lamps are rated for 120-277 volts.

Per the 2014 NEC this needs to be a listed retrofit kit. In Washington there are specific labeling instructions due to the danger is someone uses a MH or UPS lamp with no ballast.
Good point on 210.6(C)(3), first time that's been brought up, so lets see what other comments are.
