what year did the NEC add the rule of bonding the gas line. A house was built in 1995 and the gas line is not bonded. A private home inspector says it is not neccesary because the house was built before the supposed change. My instructor and myself disagree but im having trouble finding proof. Maybe a dumb question, but I must know!

It depends if the gas line is that yellow stuff... CSST- corrugated stainless steel tubing. If it is CSST then that is a manufacturers instruction requirement.

If it is standard black iron piping then the NEC has been requiring bonding for some time. Usually the egc will suffice. read art. 250.104(B)

The confusion began in the 1999 NEC 250.104(b) describing bonding of gas piping. This section was taken directly from the National Fuel Gas Code NFPA 54-1996 3.14(a). Specifically calling for bonding of gas piping to the electrode system. That was not the intent according to NFPA-54 and the NEC deffered to thier interpitation since it was an extract from thier code. NEC then reverted back the wording you now find in 250.104 since 2002 and previously found in NEC 1978 to 1996 in 250.80. From 1975 and earlier the wording was different and required bonding ot the gas pipes to the electrode system using the equipment grounding conductor tables.
