Weecently had an inspector require a bond of the metal skin of a wood frame building. According to one of mikes recent newsletters this is not required, desiable but not required. Where does the specific code reference for not being required reside?

No such code section.

What the inspector would have to show you is a section that requires the metal skin of wood frame building to be bonded.

Okay, then the inspector will have to show you how the building is likely to become energized.

Frank are you suggesting the metal skin on a wood frame building is likely to be energized?

I think that is a stretch and a half.

If I'm not mistaken, 16 volts is not high enough to require bonding.

Frank in my opinion the most likely things to energize the metal skin of a wood frame building would be the service equipment which is all required to be bonded already.

Or perhaps outdoor outlets mounted on this metal skin, again those would be bonded already.

Another question that comes to mind is how many bonds would be required, would I have bond the siding once then place a bonding jumper between each section?

I had that coming, just didn't know by whole forum!

Actually when I was a kid I got knocked on my butt from a house with alum. siding and I guess I still haven't got over it.

Even if you wanted to bond the skin of a metal building, how would you do it? The normal installation methods does not provide an electrical connection between each of the pieces of the metal skin, so you would have to bond each piece individually.

I'm not trying to knock inspectors, I know there are a lot of good ones out there. Unless your town has a code that says to bond siding, this is a good example of an inspector abusing his authority or just not having a clue on what his job really is.

What if that metal skinned wood framed building had a swimming pool within 5 ' of it?. I bet you would then see multiple bonding connections on the sections near the pool.

In that case I guess you would be bonding the siding or telling the people to cover it with new vinyl siding.
