Hello everybody ..I am new to this site and sure am glad I found this..awesome site. I have been in the trade for about a year and I am really finally starting to learn. I have not done much service work and I am wondering if there are any good books out there about service installations. I find all of the different requirements with bonding and grounding and many things confusing even with the help of the code book. It also does not help when no one wants to help you either but I am just here to learn as much as possible. Any help would be great  thanx

Rizzo, welcome to the forum.

Books? Books cost money! Hanging out around here is free. :D

There are too many good books to list. I'll let others do that. :)

(One thing I'd like to note: a common term for going into finished, resided-in houses and adding ceiling fans and troubleshooting and whatnot is "service work". When posting your questions, be sure to clarify that you're wondering about "installing a service". )

That's not the case here. Post your questions, regardless of how silly you feel they might be. Nobody's on the clock here, everybody's got time for an explanation.

Being a shameless self promoter I'll also throw you this link, there are many service-oriented topics there.

George In my case I have never seen a book on our trade, a tool or test equipment I won't buy. I figure if I can gleem one tiny bit of information from any literature, the money spent was worth it and I just like tools.

Of course with the web there is tons of information FREE just for the downloading.

You hang around here long enough - that means visit everyday and read/ask/respond - you'll learn volumes :D

Welcome aboard!

A good start would be Practical Wiring Simplified by Richter. Also look up Wiring A House, a Taunton Press book.

One free source is to request free catalogues from various manufacturers. I recently got a very thick, interesting one with a psychedelic cover from Automation Direct.

Also check the 621.__ section of your local library.

Another thing you can do is get free subscriptions to:
Electrical Contractor
Electrical Construction & Maintenance {ECM}
NEC Digest

Eventually you will need a copy of the legal book known fondly as the "NEC". The first time you buy a copy, I'd suggest you get the NPFA handbook version. It costs about ~$40 but at least is understandable. But you don't have to buy another since the code doesn't change that much.

Rizzo,

One of the best books available, everybody has one, but they forget to add it as a reference booklet - Ugly's Electrical Reference that can be found, even at Home Depot.

Here is another good one, a Freebee. It's a bunch of Mike's free graphics, self explanatory.

Next one, Free also is this one.

Best I could do for under twenty bucks, and have it be worthy of pursuit.
