Good question. Why the code requires 1.25" from the edge when using furring strips is beyond me.
Probably because furring strips are shallow, an inch at most. Any wire close to it will likely be hit with a missed nail or screw. On a standard stud, a centered wire most likely would not be hit unless someone used a longer nail or screw than called for. Of course, a homeowner would use any nail they had handy for something.
