Well I did it, I bought one. The primary impetus was I was doing a roof mounted PV system, and although the attachments I was using do not specifically require hitting a rafter, missing requires more screws which are more penetrations, and is just all around less ideal. Also for some time I have wanted a wall scanner that can find studs thru plaster and lath because I like using side screw boxes instead of old work boxes. IT worked flawlessly and was super accurate. Highly recommend. I did find that, at least for this application, use the signal graph mode. The screen shows a graph of the reflectivity (or whatever) and the top of the curve is the center.

Maybe I should have posted this in the PV forum, but what do you guys use to find rafters/trusses? Or dont you?
 
Sounds good. Finding something that will work through plaster is nice. I did my kitchen over before I sold my house. The outside walls were cinder block with stone on the outside, 1 x2 strapping on cinder block wit 1/2" rock lathe and plaster on the inside. Finding a way to hang the new cabinets was a nightmare as was fishing wire in the 1x 2 space. Make a hole in the plaster and chisel out a hole in the block for a box as the strapping was random and all over the place. Ended up making French cleats to hold the cabinets up anchored to the strapping and if there was no strapping into the block.
