Customer wants to install a Bosch AE125 whole house WH. The instructions are to run 3 40 amp circuits in the US or 1 120 amp circuit if in Canada:-?. By the diagram there are 3 L1-L2 connections in the unit. The instructions suggest that it be install in a home with no less than a 200 amp service and installed as close to panel as possible. Looks as if I will pull 3- 40 amp circ. with #8 and it will be installed near the panel so I wont have to worry about disconnects. Any one install one like this before and any tips to look out for?

They can drive a customer crazy. It's all about voltage drop. And even though it will work with a 200 amp service, your customer will see some flickering of lights when the unit calls for hot water. Now on a new house with this load designed into a larger service this is not a problem .

Thanks for the info. The rest of the story is. Customer is building a shop with a 700sq ft apartment above it. It calculated under 120amp so I went with a 200 amp service. The customer is in the army and will be moving up north for 2 years. He built this for him and his family to stay in about once a month so he can take care of the property and store things until he retires and moves back to build a house. He has thrown this water heater in at the last minute. I think I will try to talk him into a standard water heater with a plastic liner. The water will be supplied from a well and if these things are bad to surge hot and cold with a pump he probably will not want that since they have a child about 3 years old.

WOW, He is about to retire in a few years and has a 3 yr. old child ? I just reread the part

about being in the army. He could be 37-38 and getting ready to retire, smart guy.

The Bosch unit is very expensive-- your customer will be much better off with a small standard unit with a time clock. The limited amount of time your customer plans on living in the unit would take more than a lifetime to recoop his investment.
