Currently I'm working on a 240 unit apt complex. it is new and has both attached and detached garages. The code inspector is requiring me to install a single device for the garage door opener. a duplex receptacle without GFCI protection is allowed by the NEC at this location based on the exception that it is not readily assessible. His reason is that
1. someone may plug in a refrigerator or other equipment.
2. he is the inspector.
Do I have a legitimate arguement? If so how would you proceed with it. We have much work remaining on this job and irritating an inspector is not wise. Thanks

I would have made you install a GFCI, ;) , tell the inspector a single receptacle will not make a difference sine the HO will just install some type of splitter anyhow...

But, to get down to it, its not code unless your under the 2008.

And welcome to the Forum.

You can break the tabs off. So that only one of the outlets on the yoke are hot.
Might save you three dollars each, vs. the single outlet.

I hate the "what if" scenerios that people come up with, ask him for a code reference backing up what he wants you to do.

I have to agree with megabob, the what if scenerios end up costing you money,if the inspector was doing the work what do you think he would install?

Like Stickyboy said. If you are under the 2008. The GDO must be GFCI protected no exceptions.

If you are under the 08 the inspector needs to make you GFI protect it. If you are under the 05 or older, the inspector needs to leave you alone.
