Boundary

I have a client who wants to have a drywall wall become a boundary from a paint mixing room. It had existing electrical outlets in the wall, which have been removed. Can this to become a boundary by:

a) Installing a metal cover with a gasket over the opening.

b) Patching and taping the opening with drywall.

c) Either of the above

NEC does not cover this. It would be a question for the AHJ. It will also depend how much paint and fumes are involved.

You have the classification of the room plus possibility of that environment spreading through any raceway system that may be connected to those boxes.

Patching the opening with drywall likely closes the room from other rooms.

Gasketed cover may not be enough to prevent passage of gases to other areas either via wall cavity or raceways connected to the outlet boxes.

Room with negative air pressure - the gasket and cover may be fine, positive air pressure more likely a no-go.
