We are installing some dual chanel Wiremold (4800) on to a sheet rocked wall. We roughed the wall in with our mud rings mounted horizontal so that we can access the power and data through the back of the Wiremold.

The question that I have is do we need to open up a hole in the back of the Wiremold large enough to gain full access to the opening in the single-gang mud ring, or can we knock-out a hole and use chase nipple and bushing to gain access to the flush mound box?

I thought that the code had a restriction on the accessablitly of a box mounted in the fashion described above.

I believe as long as full access is available, your good!

Looking at a 5 page cut sheet of the Aluminum Wiremold (4800), I would open it up to the size of the mud ring and put a rubber grumet liner around your opening.

I assume you have two mugs rings one for power and one for other since this is dual chamber Wiremold (4800). Where ever the power is I'd also drill and tap a green screw next to you opening.

This sounds similar to the question of mounting a fixture that is considered its own junction box on a fixture box. Such as a fluorescent 4' strip mounted over a 4" round fixture box.

You're supposed to breakout that 2" tab, not just chase nipple through the 1/2" KO.

The argument is that it isn't easily accessible to take down the whole fixture to get to the junction box. In your situation, you would have to take off the wiremold box, but that seems a bit easier than taking a whole fixture down. However, the raceways may make removing the backplate of your wiremold box a little more difficult.
