Box extension on Carlon round ceiling box - how?

I have made a poor choice in using deep Carlon deep round nail-on ceiling boxes to make joints in the attic. I say that I made a poor choice because I thought that I could buy box extenders. They do not appear to make those in a round - not plastic or metal.

Can I add a metal octagon box extension? It does not appear to be proper because the edges of the round box are a bit wider. Alternatively, I could use a weatherproof RACO (red dot type box) round extension ring - but that also doesn't appear to be proper.

What is proper and correct? Is there a box extension that I am not seeing?

Just to make sure we are all on the same page, are you trying to extend the box to meet a wall finish like drywall, or are you trying to get more volume for wire or devices in a box that will not have to come flush with a finished surface?
Since you refer to an attic, I wondered whether it was going to be a finished attic or a rough access space?
 
I am using it as a junction box in the attic. I need to add cubic inches for terminations. The attic is not a walk-able attic. I am not finishing the attic.

This is for use in making wire terminations only. There is no sheetrock.

OK, that is what I thought. So the two box extensions shown so far are not going to work for you. The first one, the mud ring, would give you a little more space by moving the blank round cover plate farther out, but the second one would not have any way of mounting a fixed distance from the original box unless you build spacers of some sort.
 
Change the box in the attic and give yourself the proper room. I have used 3 gang switch boxes with a blank plate.

That was what I was thinking unless there are a lot of them that need more volume, and everything is already made up.

Just one or two boxes - could be all done before even finding out what may work and where to get it if dealing with the existing.
 
They are already in and made up. Any other recommendations? I am certain that the weatherproof box extension (link) would meet code but I am not so happy with the look. That may be my best option.

Has anyone stacked these? link

No matter what you use to extend this it will always look like a cobbler did it.


I would change the box.
