Box Extension on Fan Box

I have the metal bar type of ceiling fan box--with a metal box. Does anyone know if I can legally use a metal box extender on this? This is necessary since the face of the drywall ceiling will be 1.5" below the bottom of the truss. thanks.

I'm sure you can although I have no UL or NEC reference to back me up. You can also use a plastic goof ring; so why use that instead?

IMO you would have to use something other than the two 8/32 screws on the collar box to mount the fan hardware. SInce the collar is probably not listed for fan support then you need to support the fan independently of the collar.

I agree with Rob. I would use an Arlingfton 4" round extension collar like this one :

And use 2 or 2 1/2" 10/32 screws
