What is the largest hp and VA you've come across for a typical, residential type box fan? I have someone who would like to put receptacles in a horse barn for powering of these fans, most likely one at each stall. I am wondering how many of them I can safely put on a single 20A circuit.

Well, that's just it...the owner is going to be providing the box fans. I'm sure he's not going to buy all 20 of them the first day, but over time, and they'l probably just be whatever he finds cheapest at Wally-World that day.

I understand that whatever he plugs into those receptacles is his business, and his responsibility, too. I was just thinking 3-4 fans per circuit would probably be alright, but that's just my gut instinct. I've never needed to use more than 2 box fans in my house, ever, so it's never come up.

I hate to throw a wrench into the works, but cord and plug connecting a bathroom exhaust fan would violate 400.7 and 400.8(1). The bathfan, more than likely, is not specifically designed to permit ready removal for maintenance and repair, and not going to be intended for or identified for flexible cord connection as specified in 400.7(A)(8) and I don't see any other uses permitted that would apply to a cheap bath fan. Also 400.8(1) doesn't permit flexible cord to be used as a substitute for the fixed wiring of a structure.

Chris I think we are talking about these....

Looks like most of them are 1/8 Horsepower. 1/8 hp is not listed in 430.148 but a 1/6 horsepower is rated at 4.4 amps at 115 volts. Use that figure and tell the customer that largest fan that he can use is 1/6 hp. If he decides to get a more powerful fan, it will be his problem.
