How many conductors need to be counted for volume allowance if there is a box that includes a homerun with 6 current carrying conductors and one ground, a branch with 2 current carrying conductors and one ground, a branch with 6 current carrying conductors and one ground, and the box houses a 120V duplex receptacle - two current carrying conductors and one ground.

When I count them I come up with 19 conductors that need to be counted for box fill. I'm not totally convinced I interpreted the code correctly though. Thanks for the help!

Re: Box Fill Calculation

I counted every ground wire (instead of counting it as one), every current carrying conductor coming into the box and leaving, and counted two for the device. Per code only one ground wire should be counted?

Thanks.

Re: Box Fill Calculation

So to put Ryan's 17 in long-hand, for the cheap seats, it's:

06 current carrying conductors
+ 02 current carrying conductors
+ 06 current carrying conductors
= 14 current carrying conductors
+ 02 device
+ 01 grounding conductors
= 17 count of conductors
x (Table 314.16(B)) Wire Size Factor
= Cubic Inches of conductor fill

Thought it could use expanding. :p

Re: Box Fill Calculation

I think for clarity you should drop the words "current carrying" from the description. Just so some don't get the wrong idea that you don't have to count neutrals.
It should be conductors or equipment grounding conductor(s). ;)
