How do you size boxes when making industrial control boxes, when you have terminal strips and other control devices.???
the NEC only talks about mostly residential, so where do I find information on industrial box sizing ??
thank you. for any and all information.

Most times the box will end up being plenty big enough without having to "size" it if all the stuff fits. I have never worried about it.

I would lay the components out on a work surface and arrange for best layout. Then simply measure the outside dimensions of the layout.

Box sizing in the nec is not just for residential work. Depending on the max size wires that will be in the box then you must use the appropriate method. The nec has 2 methods for sizing boxes.

I think there is more to it then just laying out the components as you have wires sizing to considered. My guess is you have to measure the volume of the components and then use the max wire size and somehow come up with the min cu. in. Then make it bigger than that---LOL

The way I do it is lay it out on a table if I have the parts or graph paper, adding room to work on the term points ; my hands are big. You have space of the device, cable routing, easy work space, id tagging, bend ratio depending on what your building. Find a back plate that fits then the box minus the flanged edge, you work on it in the box not out in the open, so the box might get bigger to get tools and hands inside. Then try to find a spot on the wall it will fit.
