Exactly, with "requires" being the operative word. Kwired thinks it might be confusing if a device has single and 2-gang options. I think if it fits a single, then it isn't large enough to "require" a 2 gang box, and only gets a double fill call, not 4x fill.

Standard blue box from HD single gang. I have 3 #12 going in tie them together and brought out my black, white,and ground. I don’t have my code book , but is this ok ? I didn’t over fill did I? I tucked all wires nice and neat and have room for the receptacle without smashing them in.

What does the box volumn state? if it's a Carlon box it should be stamped in the back of the box. You are at 20 1/4 box fill.
