3 - 12/2 (with ground) NM cable

what is the minimum size of non-metallic box required?

thanks!

Re: box fill

Packsaddle, please don't take offense, but what type of inspector are you?

This is a pretty basic question for an inspector to be asking.

Roger

Re: box fill

This should be fairly standard for an inspector? Are you not an electrical inspector?

More information is needed, like is their going to be any devices connected to these cables?

Article 314.16 covers box fill requirements, so with the information you have provided:

6 conductors at 2.25 cubic inches = 13.5 cubic inches + EGC at 2.25 cubic inches = 15.75 cubic inches before any devices are counted. :)

Re: box fill

The choice of the nonmetallic box used will affect the calculation. . .if there are internal clamps, add another conductor to the count.

The question, as stated, is ambiguous.

Re: box fill

Bryan if there is a devicadd 4.50 so make it 20.50 cu. in.A deep box,and a cut in would be over filled.

Re: box fill

device add should have used spell check.........

Re: box fill

Yes, but we don't know what if any devices are going to be used. For all we know, this may be for two devices in a two gang box.

I thought a deep box was 22 cu.in.?

Re: box fill

This may be for nothing more than a junction box.

The real problem with this thread is the possibility of someone misrepresenting themself.

We should be careful not to be to eager to answer DIYers questions.

packsaddle, hasn't responded to my question and it has been 7 hours.

Re: box fill

Rodger, we have had this conversation before.

Why dont you want to give DIYers any help in doing things the right way.

Its just like the teenage sex issue.
"DONT DO IT"
"but if you are going to, PLEASE be safe"
"BUT DONT DO IT"
OH, and by the way, we wont tell you how to be safe, because we dont want you to do it"

Blaw-blaw-blaw.

My answer remains the same....
Just give the code ref and backup future questions with more ref. If the DIYer does not want to buy the Good Book, then you can cut him off.
Isn't this fourm about the nec and geting a better understanding of it ???

I, myself have a '02 copy and offten spend my nights following along just for fun... how else can we learn.

I have no interest int 408v Wye Xmers and service laterals vs. service interance cables.

I still vote for a residental license.

Just my two cents.

Re: box fill

Randy,
Why dont you want to give DIYers any help in doing things the right way.
Because that is the policy of this forum as set by the forum owner. There are plenty of DIY sites that these people can go to.

Re: box fill

yea??? thanks don for that input ??

AS with the NEC and so many other Offical documents, they aren't very clear are they? or maybe you would say that they can be interpreted many different ways.

Please re-read the Rules page opener..

"This NEC? Forum is for those in the electrical and related industries. Questions of a "How-To" nature by persons not involved in the electrical industry will be removed without notice.

Knowledge and the practical application of the National Electrical Code is an essential part of all electrical installations. If it's important for you to understand the National Electrical Code, then look no further. "

Re: box fill

Randy, what's your point?

Since you own a copy of the 2002 NEC, and you seem to feel the need to help this self proclaimed inspector, why don't you send him a PM.

Unlike the NEC, the rules for the forum are not to hard to understand.

Roger

Re: box fill

My only point guys,
Is how are the not yet informed, going to learn without asking questions.????

I agree that every question should be asked should be full of Code refs and code related questions.

NOT, "how do I wire a three way light"
But instead "please give the code ref that states I cant use standard 14/3 as a traveler on a 20A lumanary curcuit with a 20a OCPD."

Anyway, we dont need to argue about this, you guys are usualy right about most electrical stuff, I can give you this.....

Randy,

The short answer is just that's not what the Forum is here for.

There are many reasons for this and some even benefit the person(s) who might be excluded from participation. Looking for, or getting quick answers to incomplete & non-specific questions is no way for anyone to get the right answer or to learn the basics.

Re: box fill

Bill I have to agree with you. They are still going to do it,Roger I feel like you do. This is an nec forum.DIYS guys there are allot of sites to go to.Here we pick eachother apart CODE WISE and have fun.We also learn........

Re: box fill

The reason that I'm against this forum entertaining DIY'S is because then this forum will become a DIY'S forum. I visit those forums from time to time and offer help as I have seen other's from this forum do. This forum has taught me how to understand the NEC beyond what I think is "common knowledge" (for lack of a better term) for an experienced electrician. Those forums ask a lot of "basic" questions that I consider a waste of time to read and it clutters the site when I'm looking for some real help in understanding "the book". For instance "I want to install a light in my living room ceiling, what do I do". There are so many unknowns there and so many places to start. Yes I know I sometimes ask questions that I think will embarrass my knowledge or lack of, so I ask those questions in a P.M. to the guy's here that I trust :D
