Good question and it doesn't seemed to be addressed in the code,, I think the replies will be your are correct ., have to count 4 of the fixture wires. What kind of fixture has 8 wires ?

Looks as if the fixture complies with the exception then 4 would all that would be counted.

isnt there room in the canopy to combine them to one 16 hot and neut , I dont see why you have to count if packed neatly in canope , ive seen some with a cardboard like divider with 3 wire out the center.
