Re: box fill

Per Table 314.16(A), 9 # 12's are allowed. You may be able to sneek one or two more in depending on the volume of the plaster ring which will be marked on the ring itself. See Section 314.16 of the 2002 NEC for complete box fill calculations. :)

( with a single gand ring ) the device must also be counted in this calc.

Re: box fill

Am I wrong or does 314.16(B)(4) say that a standard 15 amp receptacle uses the same volume as a GFCI receptacle?

Re: box fill

Obviously they do not occupy the same volume, however, you are right that the code allows you to use the same fill for all devices on one strap. :)

Physis, you're right. Here again, this is where common sense is needed. I've seen guys take a GFCI receptacle and cram it into an 18cu. in. box that has (3) 14/2 NM in it. It's within Code, but doesn't make much sense. The cost difference between a 18 and a 22 cu.in. box is about 2 cents.

For an even bigger difference in size consider a GFCI and a single pole switch having the same deduction.
