Box offsets in PVC?

Sometimes I like to run PVC, but always have a slight hesitiation, due to the fact I haven't worked out a very easy way to put a box offset in it. On RMC, I've used those stand-offs which allow you to forgoe the box offset, but I haven't been able to find a similar solution for PVC. I'm sure a few of you guys have some neat ideas - anyone care to share them?

Oh yeah - and since you're required to sleeve NM with Schedule 80, why doesn't Home Cheapo or even most supply houses only carry Schedule 40?

Thanks

Brett

Cavie - does the 2002 NEC not call for protecting NM with Schedule 80? Wondering if the town I'm working in allows the 2002 NEC? All the stores I can find in the area only carry Schedule 40.

Thanks,

Brett

NEC-2002 334.15(B) Protection from Physical Damage. The cable shall be protected from physical damage where necessary by conduit, electrical metallic tubing, Schedule 80 PVC rigid nonmetallic conduit, pipe, guard strips, listed surface metal or nonmetallic raceway, or other means. Where passing through a floor, the cable shall be enclosed in rigid metal conduit, intermediate metal conduit, electrical metallic tubing, Schedule 80 PVC rigid nonmetallic conduit, listed surface metal or nonmetallic raceway, or other metal pipe extending at least 150 mm (6 in.) above the floor.
I don't think Cavie looked before posting. ;)

I sometimes use purchase pvc offsets, but mostly I just get out the hot-box and start bending. I think they look better without the cement joint and are easier to pull.

use a back strap or as bridgeport calls them a clamp back I have used hundreds and they work great holding the pipe about a 1/4 off the surface. I thought they were code as an apprentice as it was all we ever used for a company that's been around since 1914

Are these back straps plastic or metal - and can you provide a manufacturer or better yet, a link. I'm having some of those Arlington Snap Straps ( http://www.aifittings.com/i_9a.htm ) ordered, and probably want to keep some in the truck - but I'm a little concerned, as it looks from the pic that these may "push" the conduit out too far. This would mean a reverse box offset. Any comments?

Thanks,

Brett

The guys at the supply house told me the other day that they carry offsets for PVC in sizes 1 1/4" and above. Of course, I was using 1" on that job...

I generally use stand-offs (or conduit hangers or "minis") with PVC just like I would with metal pipe. As long as you size them right, they work just fine.

Orange Cheapo does carry Sch.80 in this area. My supply houses do, too. I use mostly Sch.80 when I go with PVC.

Jeff you have a violation if you are using steel pipe minnis with PVC raceway.

352.6 and 352.30 (unless you leaving them lose)

What do you use?

HeHeHe :D

Dirt. ;)

On the rare occasion I need to run PVC exposed I get plastic two hole straps, some are better than others.

No matter what you use remember the supports must be closer than 10' sometimes as close as every three feet.

I've always used mini's, myself. :)

Here I stand a good chance of failing inspection if I use steel minnis with RNC.

In my area Carlon is the major supplier of RNC products. I recommend getting a catalog.

If I don't specify this is what I will get when I ask for RNC supports.

They work but are not my choice.

I like these better
