A motel has a fridge, microwave, and coffee maker on 3 different receptacles as well as a 750 watt 120 volt space heater on one 20 amp/120 volt circuit. The fridge, microwave, and coffee maker draw 15 amps and the heater 6.25. The code requires the branch circuit conductors to have 125% of continuous load (heater) and 100% of non-continuous load. The fridge, microwave, and coffee maker are cord and plug equipment not fastened in place. Here is my question: Does all cord and plug equipment not fastened in place count toward the branch circuit load? All that would need to be done is unplug the coffee maker and the load would be under 20 amps. It could be argued that a vacuum cleaner that a maid plugged in could also be counted if she made a cup of coffee and heated up her break doughnut, or a hair blower when the wife can’t get into the bathroom because her daughter is blow-drying her hair. It seems to me the code makes no allowance as to what might be plugged in and all cord and plug equipment not fastened in place (under 16 amps) does not count toward circuit ampacity. (It is a remodel and trying to make do with existing circuits.)
