In my area, breaker locks are required for a commercial fire alarm control panel, but not line voltage smoke alarms. Assuming a residential setting, the smoke alarms would need to be AFCI protected if your state has adopted the 2008 NEC and has not amended the AFCI rules.

In NYC the requirement is LOCKING DISCONNECT SWITCH,red in color and locked in the ON position. But this is for commerical buildings. In the home it is not required, but most live volt smokes of combo smoke/carbon monoxide are battery back up.:thumbsup:
