I had a customer today. He broke a CFL bulb. Since his wife is pregnant. He called the enviromental protection agency. And they came out!! They tested the whole house for mercury contamination.
They either didn't find any or it was not enough to register on their meters.
Next thing, they won't be allowed in land fills.

I dont think they are allowed in landfills. That is wild that they actually came out.

if i had a customer call me about that, my question would be, "you've drawn up your will, right?" Just for kicks.

I have a copy of a movie of the re-enactment of the fabrication of the Edison lamp of 21 October 1879 50 years later. Edison, Henry Ford, and President Hoover look on as Francis Jehl is asked to add more mercury to the vacuum pump. Jehl and Edison were the last remaining persons that were present in 1879. Probably many ounces if not pounds were added. Edison and his workers used lots of mercury. If the EPA had existed this could not have been done.

When I was young we would at times play with mercury on a piece of cardboard. I never ate the stuff. In high school we had a demonstration of making a hammer head out of mercury by putting it in liquid nitrogen.

These are experiences and in no way suggest one should or should not be concerned with mercury pollution.

I know when I was a kid. I sneezed and broke the thermometer in my mouth. My folks went crazy looking for that little silver liquid. I don't know if they ever found it.

I had a small vial of mercury as a kid that I got from a neighbor who was an amateur gold prospector and used it in an evaporator to extract gold from his pannings. I would take out and play with by rolling around in my hands. Cool stuff.

No ill effects I know of, but on occasion I do get a wnojfv99&#&# BERFLgKUNK nreii*@#4 in my head.

When I was a kid we used to make exploding bullets with it from the book the day of the jackel. Drill the tip and seal it in with a drop of wax. Sure blew up a lot of stuff with that and as my dad was the electrician we had an endless supply of silent switches and thermostats. Didnt realize at the time how deadly the stuff really was.
