I would like some comments on the following, concerning ?bubble? wp covers.

Locations:
#1: 20a, 125v, outlet located outdoors, on the outside of a building.
A: Outlet will be ?attended?
B: Outlet will be ?un-attended?
#2: 20a, 125v, outlet located in a wash-down area, inside of a building.
A: Outlet will be ?attended?
B: Outlet will be ?un-attended?
#3: 30a, 250v outlet located outdoors, on the outside of a building.
A: Outlet will be ?attended?
B: Outlet will be ?un-attended?
#4: 30a, 250v outlet located in a wash-down area, inside of a building.
A: Outlet will be ?attended?
B: Outlet will be ?un-attended?

Note: All locations are considered wet locations by code.

Questions:
On which installation is a bubble type cover required? By which article?
On which installation is a regular flat type wp cover allowed? By which article?

Thanks, Rick Miell

Re: Bubble covers

In both cases for items #1 and #3, bubble covers are required per 406.8(B)(1).
In all of the other cases bubble covers are required for un-attended locations and standard weatherproof covers for attended locations per 406.8(B)(2).

Re: Bubble covers

Come on guys, I really need more input on this.

What does the heading of Article 406.8(B)(2) really mean? "Other Receptacles" Does this mean any receptacle in a location other than 406.8(B)(1), or any receptacle other than that stated in 406.8(B)(1)? Example: A 125volt, 20 amp receptacle in a location other than "outside" (say a inside wash down area), or only those receptacles other than a 15 or 20amp, 125 and 250v receptacle (such as a 30 amp 125v receptacle)?

Re: Bubble covers

My understanding is: Article 406.8(B)(2) covers 15- and 20-ampere, 125- and 250-volt receptacles installed in Wet Locations other than Outdoors, AND it also covers receptacles other than 15- and 20-ampere, 125- and 250-volt configurations, installed in a Wet Location. Don, Alex, would you agree?

Re: Bubble covers

In my opinion, 406.8(B)(2) covers all receptacles, no matter what their electrical rating is, in wet locations that are not covered by (B)(1).

Re: Bubble covers

Rick,
I think the word “Other” in 406.8 B2 applies to both the receptacle type and the location taken together as one situation. So any combination of location and receptacle type other than (15&20 amp 125&250V outside in a wet location) 406.8 (B)(2) would apply, just as Don and Mike have said.

Some examples of 406.8 would be:
125V 20amp outside wet = B1
250V 15amp outside wet = B1
125V 20amp inside wet = B2
250V 15amp inside wet = B2
250V 30amp outside wet = B2
250V 30amp outside wet = B2
and so on ……

I am a Building Inspector for the city of Susanville Ca. We interpet it as any recepticle on the exterior of the building, unless it's under a substantial covered porch.
