Buck Boost transformer Options for water well

I have a job where I need to install a 1.5 horsepower submersible water well pump 1200 ft from pressure switch in a residential application. It will be a 240 volt 2 wire pump. 10.6 FLA and 66.2 LRA amps.

I have a reel of #6 aluminum URD that like to use up on this job that I would direct bury. Would this be a viable application for the use of a buck boost transfomer.

It is not a good idea to use a buck/boost to overcome voltage drop, but you don't have to worry about VD in this case. The 6Al would be fine with a 10 amp load. Based on my experience well pumps draw 5 to 7 amps anyway.

I'm coming up with #1 AL to keep VD less than 3%

You can size the wire appropriately or use transformers at each end. They'll cost about $1k for both

In this particular case, the load is known and constant. What's the harm in using a boost trafo to supply only the pump? I agree with you statement in cases where the load, and thus the resulting voltage, would vary. SceneryDriver

As long as the load was happy with the increased voltage before the pump starts, it should be fine.

Note add the existing line voltage to the proposed increase. i.e. say you have a typical high service voltage to start, 248 volts, then add 10%, you would have 272 volts before the pump starts and the voltage drop takes place. Of course, if you really had 248 at the pump (open circuit), then 10% drop would still have 223 volts at the pump when running, so you really do not need the transformer!

If your service provided only 230 volts, then maybe a transformer...

Need all the data for a decision.:?

Pump could be 208-230V

I get a 19.4 volt drop. 240-19.4=220 volts using your #6 AL

I would pass on the buck-boost transformers.
