We are installing a 200 kVA fuel cell a building and have been advised that it will have problems if the voltage ever goes over 440V and we should provide a buck/boost transformer to step the voltage down by 8%.

Anyone have details of such a unit? Names of suppliers?

A buck/boost transformer provides a fixed change in voltage from the source. It is wired as an auto transformer with the secondary adding (boost) or subtaracting (buck) from the primary voltage. Most of the transfomer manufacturers make them. Here is a link to one catalog.

also, a B-B xfmr provides no isolation.

B-B xfmrs are commonly available to with Buck of boost in voltages of 6, 12, 16, and 32 volts.

They are th most cost effective way of changing the voltage as they do not have to handle the entire load but only require enough KVA for the voltage change.

for reference, they are also not "constant voltage transformers"...or "voltage regulators". the output changes in relation to the input...so there is no guarantee of a steady voltage or min/max.

Augie:

As primary voltage changes on a standard transformer won't the secondary voltage also change?

One item that FREAKS a quite a few electricians are the voltage rating listed on the ratings, such as 120 to 24 or 240/120 to 24/12.

Brian I think Augie was referring to this...

It sounds to me like someone expects the buck boost to maintain a constant voltage.
