i need a buck boost transformer for an ac unit that was recommended by a couple of guys on this forum. i have to increase the voltage for the ac unit on a roof . my question is does the trans need to be installed at the ac or is it ok at the panel ? thanks again for the help.

All other issues being equal the location of a boost transformer should be close to the source.

A buck transformer should be located close to the load.

This will result in the least voltage drop.

True.

However, the OP puts the load end at an RTU. There may not be enough room to install the transformer inside the unit, especially when allowing for the required adequate ventilation spacing. So installing at the load end may likely require a separate enclosure. Nevertheless, he did say he had to increase the voltage, so that would hold with your first scenario...

How would we know?

We don't.
How would we know what?

I believe I covered the "we don't" know with "may", as in might, perhaps, possibly, could, maybe...

FWIW many buck boosts are NEMA 3R rated.
Again, "may" covered that possibility. Perhaps I took it a little far with "may likely", but then how would we know?

So your point was.....

All things might not be equal

Glad you had my back here, I would hate to see the obvious overlooked. ;) :D

Correction, more like: All things [very well] may likely not be equal, and here's one possibility that stands out and shouts, 'Hey! ...here I am.'

Sometimes I just hate ...gr-r-r-r, damn typos... have to be the one to state the obvious. It just meets with such overwhelming appreciation that it makes me feel among the privileged—such as yourself, Bob—that I practically bend over forwards ....e-e-yikes, these typos are getting to me... backwards to do it. ;):D
