The Code won't help as it doesn't specify an actual distance.

In my work areas, the AHJs and the PoCo have agreed upon a maximum distance, and how it is measured.

The rationale is to minimize the length of wire not effectively protected by OCPD inside the house. What makes the difference is the OCPD required to be associated with the service disconnect, not the disconnect itself.
