515.3 Class I Locations. Table 515.3 shall be applied where Class I liquids are stored, handled, or dispensed and shall be used to delineate and classify bulk storage plants. The class location shall not extend beyond a floor, wall, roof, or other solid partition that has no communicating openings. [30:8.1, 8.2.2]

From the NFPA 2008 NEC Handbook (I highly recommend you purchase a copy):

"Table 515.3 is extracted from Table 8.2.2 of NFPA 30-2003, Flammable and Combustible Liquids Code. Section 7.3.4.5 of NFPA 30, as referenced in the first two items in column 1 of Table 515.3, states:
7.3.4.5 Where equipment such as dispensing stations, open centrifuges, plate and frame filters, and open vacuum filters is used in a building, the equipment and ventilation of the building shall be designed to limit flammable vapor–air mixtures under normal operating conditions to the interior of equipment and to not more than 1.5 m (5 ft) from equipment that exposes Class I liquids to the air. [NFPA 30-2003: 7.3.4.5]"

The handbook goes on with several illustrations that will make the purchase a good deal.

To answer your question, there are several different scenerios and they range from 3' to 5'. If you use 5', you should be OK.

Remember that beyond the Cl 1 Div 1 boundary the classification goes to Class 1 Div 2 for a considerable distance. You can't go directly from Div 1 to non-classifed.
